CHESAPEAKE BAY RETRIEVERS

Beartown Chesapeakes

Breeders of quality chesapeakes for thirty years. We specialize in Chesapeakes for the hunter and active family. Our dogs are multipurpose companions. We hunt waterfowl and upland game with our Chessies. When the winter permits, we work them as a sled team.

Our Breeding Plan

Beartown litters are carefully planned to provide the type of pups that our clients want. Some litters will be a little more "high-powered" than others as we do bred to field trial males when there is enough interest in that type of pup. We usually have another litter from more "laid-back" breeding around the same time to give our customers a choice.

Health & Temperament

Soundness and good temperament are very important to us. All breeding stock is certified clear of hip dysplasia and inherited eye disease, both concerns in the breed. Most of our females are placed in foster homes so we can see how they function in the real world instead of just the kennel situation. This gives us a better idea of temperament and adaptability. Our females are breed a maximum of four times if they are superior producers. Usually three litters will be all they have, sometimes less. We often ship our females to U.S. stud dogs to widen the gene pool and are frequently obtaining pups from different lines.

Our Guarantee

Pups are sold with a written replacement guarantee which covers all major hereditary and congenital problems. We do not ask that your first dog be returned, unless it is your wish, just proof of neutering.

Behavior and Training Problems

We replace for temperament problems only on an individual basis with proof of inborn dominant/aggressive behavior. Owners must contact us immediately about any poor behaviour. Most of these problems are caused by a lack of proper training and can be avoided or corrected very easily at a young age. We are always available for consultation in person or by telephone or letter. Replacement for total lack of working ability is also on an individual basis. Many perfectly good dogs in all breeds have been ruined by poor training and we cannot take responsibility for that. However, we offer hands-on help with training for those living close enough. For others, we are just a phone call away.

We will take back any Beartown Chesapeake if the owners can no longer keep the dog. If the distance is too great, we will try to arrange a new home in that area or the dog may be shipped to us at the owner's expense. We encourage buyers to get in touch with us right away if they have any problems. A Beartown Chesapeake may not be resold without prior consultation with us.

Purchase Information

Our pups are usually reserved before they are ready to go, many even before the litters are born. We require a $50 deposit to reserve a pup. This will be part of the $800 purchase price. The deposit is non-refundable unless we cannot furnish a suitable pup, hardship cases excepted.

Shipping

Shipping is at the buyer's expense. We have shipping crates available for sale or you may send your own to us by mail a couple of weeks before shipping time. We ship from Montreal, QC. Current shipping cost run from $150-$200 depending on the airline & distance.

It is becoming more and more difficult to ship puppies by air, especially during the hottest and coldest weather.

Registration

All of our dogs are registered with the Canadian Kennel Club. Purebred animal registrations are controlled by government regulation in Canada. According to law, the breeders must provide the new owner with an individual registration showing the animal to be registered in their name. These pups can be AKC registered by the new owners.
