Raising them the right way.

Puppies need guidance, supervision and, often, correction. Most dogs of any breed are given up to shelters when they are 10 to 18 months old. The behaviors that were cute in a little puppy are no longer entertaining. Dominance and aggression in a large breed is something that must be avoided. A big, aggressive dog is a danger to all.

Your personality.

Are you a person who deals promptly and firmly with any troubles in your life? Would you rather avoid confrontation in any form? Do you think that all problems can worked out by discussion or ignored? Your personality is the biggest factor in deciding on a breed. A small or very docile dog might be a better choice. You may be more comfortable with a cat or other pet.
