CHESAPEAKE BAY RETRIEVERS
Non-standard colours?
The more unusual colours in the breed are actually patterns.
- Tan-point- This is the doberman/gordon setter/hound type pattern produced by the at. As Chesapeakes do not carry black pigment, the pattern is brown or dilute brown with tan. Typically, the tan points are not obvious on newborn pups but gradually show with growth. The tan area may be confined to lower legs, chest marking, muzzle, cheeks, eye spots and anal area. It can also extend all the way up the legs and cover most of the head. This is the tan point pattern often seen in hound breeds.
- Patterned/shaded sedge or deadgrass- This pattern is likely produced by variants of the ay gene. The currently accepted term for this gene is "fawn" to distinguish from ee yellow/red which produces those colours in Labradors and Irish Setters among others.
- Brindle- This pattern is produced by Kbr in the newly named K series.
