CHESAPEAKE BAY RETRIEVERS
Questions about Beartown Kennels
Why is your kennel named Beartown?
Old stories say that this was a major route used by bears traveling to and from summer feeding and winter denning areas.
Where are you located?
We are near Stanbridge East in the beautiful Eastern Townships area of Quebec, Canada. Lake Champlain is about 10 miles away. We are about an hour from both Montreal, QC and Burlington, VT.
What services do you offer?
We breed Chesapeake Bay Retrievers exclusively. We train all sporting breeds for retrieving on land and water. Obedience training is available for all breeds. Group and individual lessons are given for field and obedience work. We board dogs by the day or long term.
Do you have other breeds for sale?
Not at the present. It is hard to research and understand just one breed, learn about health problems and produce the right kind of dog.
Do you only sell puppies?
Most of our sales are pups but we often have young dogs started in obedience and field training available. Occasionally we offer fully trained dogs and sometimes have older stock or rescue dogs for placement in the right homes.
I'm not a hunter, will you sell me a pup?
We sell many of our pups as companion dogs. Hunting & competition homes are always warmly welcomed, but hunters must be aware that both breeds do best when they have lots of contact with their owner and family. These are not dogs that can be kept in storage for 10 months of the year, then brought out to work for the hunting season.
Am I the right type of person for a Chesapeake?
The Chesapeake is an athletic dog. If you are looking for a full time couch potato or a fireplace ornament, perhaps you should research a different breed. Many of the dogs turned in to Humane Societies and Rescue organizations are given up because the owners were not prepared to deal with the amount of time and energy needed to keep their dogs exercised and content. An underworked dog can be very inventive in finding ways to channel excess energy. This breed is intelligent and will take over the family if there is no proper human leadership. We tell prospective owners that, if you are willing to invest time in providing exercise and training and, if you will treat this animal like a dog instead of a four legged person in a fur coat, you should be a great owner.
