CHESAPEAKE BAY RETRIEVERS
Registered names-Call names
Beartown
This is a registered kennel name. In Canada it is common for established breeders to register their kennel with the CKC in order to have an exclusive name. All of the pups born here must have BEARTOWN as a prefix or suffix in their registered name.
Litter letter
Our litters are designated by a letter of the alphabet, a method used by most european countries. We ask that the registered name contain one word starting with that letter.
Themes
All of our dogs are named with words from Native American languages. We have a number of dictionaries and word lists to give a choice. Many people also find local towns, rivers, etc. to be a source of good names.
Additional words
These are allowed as long as the total name does not exceed the maximum.
Choosing a name.
If your pup has to be shipped, we will ask you to choose a registered name and send it back to us within two weeks. As all registrations have to wait until we have the information, promptness is a courtesy to other buyers. If we do not receive the name in reasonable time, we will pick one and register the pup with that name.
Call names.
No matter what the registered name, you may call the pup anything you want. We do suggest short, crisp names that do not sound like common obedience commands or everyday words. We use the dog's name to send it on a retrieve so would avoid using "Teal", "Shoot" or "Duck" for a call name. Might lead to confusion and a lot of jumping in the water!
Maximum length.
Thirty letters and spaces are allowed for the registered name. We must provide a choice of three names. Only a couple of first choices have ever been rejected, but it is wise to make all names acceptable.
