CHESAPEAKE BAY RETRIEVERS

CHESAPEAKES

RECOMMENDED READING

GENERAL DISTRIBUTION BREED BOOKS

THE NEW COMPLETE CHESAPEAKE BAY RETRIEVER-

Janet Horn & Dr. Daniel Horn (Howell) ISBN 0-87605-099-2 The latest Howell Chesapeake book but now out of print. Good pictures of recent dogs, perhaps weighted a bit toward the show ring. Excellent chapter on tracking.

THE COMPLETE CHESAPEAKE BAY RETRIEVER-

Eloise Heller Cherry (Howell) ISBN 0-87605-074-7 An older book, might still be available in second hand bookstores or online auctions. Nice for pictures of earlier dogs that might be in your dog's pedigree.

THE CHESAPEAKE BAY RETREIVER-

Arthur S. Beaman (Denlinger) ISBN 0-87714-075-8 Lots of field training material. Interesting and somewhat opinionated. Good pictures of dogs not found in the other books.

CHESAPEAKE BAY RETRIEVERS-

Stan Henschel (T.F.H.) ISBN 0-7938-1599-1 One of a series on different breeds. Short discussion of the breed, training, etc. The rest of the book is generic. Nice pictures though.

AMERICAN CHESAPEAKE CLUB BREED BOOKS

THE CHESAPEAKE BAY RETRIEVER-

ed Dyane Baldwin. This is the latest book for sale to members of the ACC. Lots of up to date photos and statistics. Two earlier club books "CHESAPEAKE BAY RETRIEVERS" & "OUR CHESAPEAKES" were also excellent sources for breed history, pedigrees and statistics. They would be well worth searching for if you are really interested in breed and club history. The club books tend to have more information about specialty trials and national specialty shows. Great historical breed references.

THE AMERICAN CHESAPEAKE CLUB BULLETIN-

published bi-monthy for members of the ACC. Not a book but still wonderful reference material. I feel fortunate to have most issues back to 1977.

GENERAL FIELD TRAINING

NOT RECOMMENDED

"WATER DOG", "GAME DOG" and other books in Richard Wolters series.
Most beginning trainers of Chesapeakes should avoid these books. There are some decent ideas, however, the emphasis on control & very structured training at a young age does not suit most Chessies. Followed to the letter, this training method can completely ruin very promising pups.

RECOMMENDED

RETRIEVER PUPPY TRAINING-

Loveland & Rutherford (Alpine) ISBN 0-931866-38-3.
Good material on puppy character traits, bonding and obedience. Although the authors are Lab owners and trainers, and the section on advanced puppy training would be more than most hunting/companion owners want or need, the basics are good and well explained.

TRAINING RETRIEVERS FOR THE MARSHES AND MEADOWS-

James B. Spencer (Denlinger's) ISBN 0-87714-140-1
The author has experience with the "Big Three" of the retriever breeds and understands that different temperaments sometimes dictate different approaches to training problems. His book "RETRIEVER TRAINING TESTS", recently reissued, is a valuable tool for the beginner.

Tri-Tronics RETRIEVER TRAINING-

Jim and Phyllis Dobbs with Alice Woodyard (Tri-Tronics, Inc) ISBN 0-9638386-0-1 Although the training methods are mostly conceived for e-collar training, the puppy training program and explanation of training concepts are worth the price of this book.
