CHESAPEAKE BAY RETRIEVERS

CANADIAN REGISTRATION PROCEDURES

Canadian Kennel Club rules.

All of our puppies are registered with the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC*). The Canadian Kennel Club is the official registering organisation in Canada. Founded in 1888, the CKC is member run with an elected board. Most serious Canadian breeders are members of the CKC.

Breeders pay for registration.

Registration laws for all purebred animals in Canada are set by the Department of Agriculture. Canadian law requires breeders to provide buyers of any animal sold as purebred with an individual registration naming that person as owner of the animal. We are never permitted to charge extra for papers and anyone doing so should be reported.

[*This is not to be confused with the Continental Kennel Club, a recently established US group that also uses the CKC abbreviation. The Continental Kennel Club provides registrations for any breed or crossbreed and their registrations are not recognized by other countries]

Permanent identification obligatory.

In Canada, all puppies have to be permanently identified prior to sale. We are still using a tattoo for identification, having had several bad experiences with migrating microchips in young puppies. New owners can have microchipping done at a later date if they wish.

First step.

Litter application is filled in and sent to the stud owner for signature, unless we are using our own male. In the case of an American owned male, the application is sent to the AKC for confirmation of ownership. We must also order a 3 generation certified pedigree for AKC males. When all that is done, the application is sent to the CKC.

Second step.

When the litter application has been processed, the CKC sends out an individual application for each pup in the litter. These are filled out with information about identification, registered name and new owner information.

As members of the CKC, we get a discount if all pups in the litter are registered at the same time. To qualify for this discount, all individual applications must be returned to the CKC, even if a pup is deceased. These regulations guard against fraudulent registration though, human nature being what it is, there will always be some people that try to cheat the system!

Final step.

We receive the individual registration certificates from the CKC, enter the registration numbers in our breeding records book, then forward the certificates to proud owners. In the case of U.S. ownership, if the dog is then to be registered with the AKC, it is necessary to obtain a 3 generation certified pedigree from the CKC. If both parents are already AKC registered, this step can be omitted. The AKC will provide applications for registration of a foreign born dog upon request.
